When I am black I am what you see before you open your eyes.
I am the darkness before the light
I am the shielding cape that smothers you.
I am the night blanketing over the earth
When I am black I am your favourite leather chair.
I am the writing in your forbidding book
I am the burnt wood in the fire.
I am a kitten on your lap
When I am black I am the dead flower in your garden
I am the cockroach you just sprayed
I am the soil under the tree
I am the shadow behind the house
When I am black I am the blackboard in your class
I am the pencil in your hand.
I am the shoes you have to wear.
I am the computer screen staring back at you.
When I am black I am a widows dress at a funeral.
I am the feeling of loss
I am the mascara running down your face.
I am the coffin in the church
When I am black I am hated.
I am excluded.
I am feared.
But
When Im black I am beautiful.

And so it is, just like you said it would be.
Life goes easy on me
...most of the time.
